How do I know what Bank/Patch value to send to Receptor?
Program Changes can be set up in two main ways on Receptor, and more advanced setups can be created using special tools:
-
Standard Program Changes
Using this method a standard program change message will perform patch changes on it's own. Its much simpler than the Bank Select method, but is more limited as well. To set Receptor up for this mode of operation turn to the setup page on Receptor viewer. The right hand side of this page contains settings for MIDI. Click to select the option Ignore Bank Select and Target. You may notice a button appears to the right of this option. Clicking on this will allow you to select a type of receptor patch to use with program changes. Because only 128 program changes can ever be sent you are limited to changing Only Receptor source or single or multi patches in one bank.

Using Bank Select
Bank Select is a method that combines MIDI continuous controller (cc) messages and program change messages to load patches on Receptor. Although more complex this method allows you to select any patch stored within Receptor instantly. A bank Select message is actually made up of MIDI messages sent one at a time. The first Message is sent as continuous controller 0 and is called the Most Significant Byte (MSB). This message determines what kind of patch is loaded on Receptor (Such as Multi, Single, Source etc..). The second message sent is continuous controller 32, called the Least Significant Byte (LSB). Once the MSB has determined a patch type the LSB specifies the Bank that the patch will be loaded from. The last part of the message is just a standard MIDI program change message, which loads the actual patch within your Receptor Bank. This may seem a bit overwhelming, but Receptor makes it easy for you to find the components you'll need to load a particular patch using this method. At the bottom of each patch load window on receptor is a message with the Bank Name, and then MSB/LSB numbers. For example: it may say Banks: B4 II Factory MSB/LSB: 000/005. To access this Bank you need to send an MSB value of 0, followed by an LSB value of 5, and then a program change for the patch you'd like to load within the bank. Put another way, you would send a value of 0 on CC #0, then a value of 5 on CC#32, and then a program change. More information on this method as well as what the various MSB values do on Receptor and using Bank Select please see the Receptor Manual.

Special Setups
Receptor has several additional options for setting up program changes. the Use Channel setting allows you to filter Program Change messages by Midi Channel, so that only a specific keyboard or channel on Receptor receives program changes. Selecting none from this list will also allow Receptor to filter out ALL program change messages to avoid accidentally loading a new patch. When this is set to a single channel an additional option also appears to Route All Other Channels to Source Plugin. Selecting this option allows you to bypass all of Receptor's program change mechanisms and send program change messages directly to the instrument plugin using MIDI channels that are left available. For example if you select to send Receptor's Program change messages on channel 1, then plugins on channels 2-16 will be available for program changes to go directly to the source plugins on those channels.
